Design fountains and basins by coordinating stone selection, structure, waterproofing, water chemistry, hydraulics, joints, frost, lighting and maintenance.
Water gives stone movement and risk
Fountains combine architecture, hydraulics and changing light. Constant wetting also exposes stone, joints and metals to deposits, staining, erosion and biological growth.
Define whether stone is structural, cladding, coping, sculpture or submerged lining.
Structure and waterproofing
The basin must resist water pressure and movement. A complete waterproofing or watertight structure is required beneath the visible stone.
Coordinate drains, overflows, pipe penetrations and access before fabrication.
Water chemistry and stone
pH, hardness, disinfectants and evaporation influence scale and surface change. Carbonate stones can be etched by aggressive water.
Test the selected material and operate water within a documented range.

Exterior climate and safety
Frost, emptying cycles and splash zones can damage saturated stone. Provide drainage and winter operating procedures.
Consider slip resistance, child access, water depth, electrical safety and local public-space rules.
Maintenance and conservation
Provide filtration, access for pumps and a cleaning plan that does not attack stone. Remove deposits after identifying them.
Historic fountains require minimal intervention and documentation of stone, hydraulic changes and previous repairs.
