Marble and natural-stone installation in Bordeaux

Looking for a marble installer in Bordeaux or South-West France?

Marbre Import supports your marble and natural-stone installation project in Bordeaux, Gironde and across South-West France.

From indoor and outdoor floors to staircases, walls, bathrooms, showers, terraces, pools, coping stones, large-format slabs and bespoke pieces, every project requires an installation method suited to the stone, the substrate and the site conditions.

Installing natural stone involves far more than fixing slabs to a surface. The final quality also depends on substrate preparation, accurate site measurements, the products used, the layout plan, cutting, joints and the required finish.

Marble, granite, quartzite, travertine, onyx and limestone each behave differently. The installation method must be selected accordingly.

Already chosen your stone, or still looking for the right material?

We can assess your project from plans, photographs, dimensions and practical information about the site. If you are managing the project from abroad, our English-speaking team can also coordinate the marble work with your architect, interior designer or contractor.

Marble and natural-stone flooring installation

Flooring is one of the most common applications for marble and natural stone.

The quality of the finished work starts with the quality of the substrate.

Even the finest slab cannot deliver a satisfactory result if the surface has significant problems with flatness, moisture or stability.

Several points must therefore be checked before installation:

substrate condition, flatness, dimensions, slab layout, surrounding constraints and stone type.

Depending on the site, preparatory work may be required.

This may include correcting unevenness or applying a suitable levelling compound where required.

Formats and veining are also considered to achieve a balanced and consistent result.

Marble staircase installation

A natural-stone staircase requires a high degree of precision.

The elements may include:

  • treads;
  • contretreads;
  • landings;
  • skirting;
  • finished edges;
  • stair nosings;
  • starting and finishing pieces.

Accurate site measurements are essential for fabrication and any required adjustments.

Thickness, finish and edge profiles must also be specified to suit the project.

With strongly veined marble, the orientation of each piece can be planned to maintain visual continuity between treads and risers.

Marble wall installation and natural-stone cladding

Natural stone can also be used as wall cladding.

Applications include:

feature walls, entrances, lobbies, bathrooms, showers, fireplaces, niches and architectural details.

Vertical installation involves different constraints from flooring.

The weight and size of the pieces, the substrate and the fixing or bonding system must all be assessed before work begins.

The larger the format, the more critical substrate preparation and handling become.

Marble installation in bathrooms and showers

Marble and natural stone can create very different bathroom styles depending on the material and finish selected.

Installation may include:

  • flooring;
  • walls;
  • shower areas;
  • niches;
  • benches;
  • vanity tops;
  • bespoke cladding.

In wet areas, the beauty of the stone must never overshadow the technical requirements.

The following must be considered:

waterproofing, falls, joints, substrate, surface finish and slip resistance.

A highly polished stone that works beautifully on a feature wall may not be suitable for a shower floor.

The material and finish must therefore be selected for the actual use of the space.

Natural-stone terrace installation

In Bordeaux and South-West France, many natural-stone projects also involve terraces and other outdoor spaces.

Outdoor installation requires consideration of:

  • substrate type;
  • water drainage;
  • falls;
  • exposure;
  • temperature variations;
  • stone porosity;
  • finish;
  • slip resistance.

Not every stone is suitable for every outdoor setting.

The material must be chosen for its performance as well as its appearance.

Pool surrounds and coping-stone installation

Pool surrounds and coping stones require particular care.

The stone is exposed to water, sunlight, pool-treatment products and barefoot traffic.

The surface finish is therefore essential.

A highly polished surface may become unsuitable when wet.

The stone, its finish and the installation method must all be selected for the specific environment.

Projects may include:

coping stones, pool surrounds, steps, walls, surrounding terraces and pieces made to the pool’s exact dimensions.

Large-format marble and natural-stone installation

Large formats create surfaces with fewer joints and showcase the stone’s natural pattern.

They do, however, require greater preparation and precision.

A large slab requires:

  • a particularly even substrate;
  • appropriate handling equipment and methods;
  • access compatible with its dimensions;
  • a suitable installation method;
  • advance planning of cuts and junctions.

Access dimensions may also need to be checked before fabrication or delivery.

There is little value in fabricating a large piece that cannot be brought into the building.

Marble, granite, quartzite, travertine and onyx: each stone requires a different approach

The term “natural stone” covers materials with very different characteristics.

Marble

Marble can be used for floors, walls, staircases and many decorative features.

Its veining makes the layout plan especially important when several pieces must form one coherent composition.

Travertin

Travertine is naturally porous and contains cavities.

Depending on the product and finish, it may be supplied filled or unfilled.

Installation and finishing must take these characteristics into account.

Granite

Granite is particularly hard.

Cutting and adjustments therefore require suitable equipment.

It is suitable for many indoor and outdoor applications, depending on the variety and finish selected.

Quartzite

Natural quartzite is generally very hard.

Fabrication, cutting and any on-site adjustments require particular care.

Onyx

Decorative onyx is generally more delicate.

Its translucency can also make the choice of substrate and installation products especially important.

Limestone

Limestone is available in many densities and finishes.

Its suitability must be determined from its technical properties and exposure.

The layout plan: an essential stage in marble installation

The quality of the finished work depends as much on installation as on the way the individual pieces are arranged.

The layout plan sets out the position of each slab before installation begins.

For a strongly veined stone, it can be used to plan:

  • vein direction;
  • the connection between two pieces;
  • pattern centring;
  • perimeter cuts;
  • continuity between different areas;
  • symmetrical or book-matched effects where appropriate.

An exceptional stone can lose much of its visual impact if the layout is poorly planned.

Conversely, thoughtful slab selection and placement can turn several pieces into one coherent composition.

Can marble be installed on any substrate?

No.

Before installation, the substrate must be compatible with the stone and the chosen fixing system.

It must provide adequate stability and flatness.

Depending on the site, preparation may be required before installation.

An existing surface should never be assumed to be ready for stone simply because it appears solid.

The conditions must be checked on site.

Site measurements and project preparation

For bespoke pieces, site measurements ensure that fabrication is based on the actual dimensions of the space.

This stage is particularly important for:

  • staircases;
  • large-format slabs;
  • wall elements;
  • special pieces;
  • connections with existing work.

The installer can also review site conditions before work starts:

substrate, access, handling and any preparatory work required.

How does an installation project proceed?

1. Initial project review

Plans, photographs, areas, location and material are reviewed.

2. Site visit and measurements where required

Dimensions and site constraints are checked.

3. Substrate inspection and preparation

The substrate is inspected and any necessary preparatory work is identified.

4. Layout planning

Where required, the slab arrangement and vein direction are planned before installation.

5. Bespoke fabrication where required

Bespoke pieces are fabricated to the approved dimensions.

6. Delivery and handling

Site access and the weight of each piece are planned in advance.

7. Installation

Each element is installed according to the characteristics of the material and substrate.

8. Joints and finishing

Finishing work completes the installation.

9. Final inspection

The completed work is inspected after installation.

Frequently asked questions sur la pose de marbre

Can we appoint you for installation only?

Yes. We can assess an installation project even when the stone has already been purchased. We will need information about the material, formats, quantities and site.

Do you install materials other than marble?

Yes. Projects may involve marble, granite, quartzite, travertine, onyx, limestone and other natural stones, provided that the material is suitable for the intended application.

Do you take site measurements?

Yes, where the project and the fabrication of the pieces require it.

Can substrate preparation be included?

Yes. Preparation requirements are assessed according to the condition of the substrate and the planned installation.

Can marble be installed over existing tiles?

This may be possible in some situations, but the existing covering and its substrate must be inspected before the installation method is chosen. Stability, flatness and adhesion must all be checked.

Can marble be installed over underfloor heating?

Yes, subject to certain conditions. The heating system, substrate, stone and installation products must be compatible.

What thickness should be selected?

There is no single thickness suitable for every application. It depends on the material, format, substrate, intended use and structural constraints.

Should white adhesive always be used for marble?

The choice of installation products depends on the material. Light-coloured or translucent stones may require particular precautions to avoid altering their appearance.

What joint width should be allowed?

Joint width depends on the product, format, substrate, environment and installation system. A single rule cannot be applied to every project.

Do you install large-format slabs?

Yes. Large-format projects can be assessed, subject to handling and site-access constraints.

Do you work on terraces and swimming pools?

Yes. The stone and finish must, however, be selected for outdoor conditions and the presence of water.

Do you work only in Bordeaux?

No. La zone principale couvre Bordeaux, la Gironde et plus largement le Sud-Ouest.

How much does marble installation cost?

The cost depends on the stone, format, area, condition of the substrate, cuts, complexity of the layout, access and preparation required. We therefore prepare a quotation after reviewing the project.
