Stone Roofing: Slate, Stone Tiles and Traditional Coverings
Understand natural-stone roofing through geology, splitting, gauge, overlaps, fixings, roof pitch, weight, drainage, wind, snow and repair.
Roofing stone is a specialised product
Slate splits along cleavage into thin units; traditional stone tiles may be thicker limestone, sandstone or schist. Suitability depends on quarry fabric, frost resistance and established local use.
Wall or floor stone should not be assumed suitable for a roof.
Weight and roof structure
Stone roofs can be heavy, especially with thick overlapping units. Survey rafters, battens, walls and foundations before replacement or conversion.
Structural design must include snow, wind and maintenance loads.
Pitch, gauge and overlap
Roof pitch, exposure, unit size and fixing pattern determine headlap and sidelap. Water must flow across courses without relying on sealant.
Ridges, valleys, verges, eaves and penetrations deserve full-size details.

Fixings, metals and climate
Use durable fixings compatible with stone and exposure. Copper, stainless steel and other metals require correct detailing to avoid corrosion or staining.
Freeze–thaw, hail and thermal movement influence regional practices. Follow local roofing rules and quarry guidance.
Inspection and repair
Inspect broken or slipped units, corroded fixings, ridge movement and blocked drainage. Replace locally with compatible size, thickness and appearance.
Historic roofs should retain sound material and characteristic irregularity while restoring weather resistance and safety.
