Waterproofing and wet areas
Waterproofing Beneath Stone in Showers, Hammams and Critical Junctions
Design continuous waterproofing beneath natural stone by coordinating membranes, drains, penetrations, corners, steam, adhesives and movement joints.
Stone and grout are not the waterproof layer
Water passes through joints, interfaces and some stones. A complete membrane or waterproof construction must direct it to the drain without relying on the visible finish.
Select a system approved for the actual use: shower, steam room, pool surround or other wet zone.
Continuity at critical details
Corners, wall–floor junctions, niches, benches, thresholds, pipes and drains concentrate risk. Each detail needs compatible reinforcement, overlap and movement allowance.
Coordinate these elements before the stone layout so that cuts and joints do not compromise the waterproofing.
Steam and vapour
Hammams create high temperature and vapour pressure. The assembly may require vapour control, insulation and ceiling details beyond ordinary shower waterproofing.
All layers—from structure to stone—must be compatible with heat, steam and repeated cleaning.
| Junction | Main risk | Required coordination |
|---|---|---|
| Drain | Leak at flange or poor fall | Membrane connection and finished level |
| Pipe penetration | Movement and incomplete seal | Sleeve or approved collar |
| Niche | Multiple corners and standing water | Falls and reinforced membrane |
| Threshold | Water escape to dry area | Upstand, door and floor levels |
| Movement joint | Tearing or bridging | System-compatible joint detail |
Stone, adhesive and moisture sensitivity
Light, translucent or resin-backed stones can darken or react when moisture is trapped. Verify adhesive colour, cure, coverage and compatibility.
A waterproof surface may slow drying, so substrate acceptance and curing periods are essential.
Testing and handover
Inspect the membrane before covering and perform required flood or integrity tests. Photograph concealed details and keep product batch records.
At handover, verify drainage, sealant joints and maintenance access. Cleaning instructions must protect both the stone and waterproofing interfaces.
