Diagnosis: Frost-Damaged and Spalling Exterior Stone
Diagnose exterior stone that cracks, flakes or bursts after frost by examining saturation, pore structure, drainage, joints, salts, orientation and freeze–thaw exposure.
Frost damage needs water
Freezing becomes destructive when pores contain enough water and repeated cycles build pressure. Cold temperature alone does not explain why one zone fails and another remains sound.
Trace where water enters, accumulates and dries.
Read the damage pattern
Horizontal tops, copings, poorly drained joints, splash zones and shaded bases are often most exposed. Scaling may follow bedding or a dense surface crust.
Compare damaged and sound pieces from the same façade or batch.
Contributing factors
Stone pore structure, quarry orientation, microcracks and saturation influence resistance. De-icing salts, hard mortars and sealed faces can intensify cycles.
Incorrect falls, missing drips and open joints are common construction causes.

Investigation and testing
Record exposure, winter history, drainage and earlier treatments. Petrography, absorption and freeze–thaw tests may support decisions when representative.
Do not use a single generic stone-family claim as proof of durability.
Repair and prevention
Correct water details first. Replace failed pieces with compatible stone oriented and detailed for exposure; use compatible joints.
Avoid relying on water repellent as the sole remedy. Inspect copings, gutters and joints before each winter.
