Specify natural-stone paving, flags, kerbs, steps and street details that combine visual identity, accessibility, drainage, traffic resistance and maintainability.
Stone gives public space a long memory
Paving establishes scale, routes and civic identity. Granitee setts, limestone flags, kerbs and channels can be repaired and reused over decades when dimensions and construction suit traffic.
Historic character should not become an excuse for uneven or inaccessible surfaces. Good design reconciles material expression with contemporary use.
Selecting units and finishes
Choose stone for abrasion, freeze–thaw exposure, salts, bending, staining and realistic maintenance. Unit thickness and plan dimensions depend on load and support.
Texture must provide suitable slip resistance while remaining comfortable for pedestrians, wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles.

Accessibility and inclusive routes
Provide continuous routes with controlled crossfall, joint width, lippage and slip resistance. Drainage slots, tree pits and covers must not create wheel traps.
Visual and tactile contrast should be tested in the actual lighting and wet conditions, not assumed from dry sample colours.
Details and interfaces
Resolve cuts at façades, kerbs, covers, trees, stairs and changes of pattern. Avoid small unstable infill pieces created by late coordination.
Protect adjacent buildings from splash and ensure joints or bedding do not block drying of sensitive historic masonry.
Repair, reuse and asset management
Keep records of stone source, dimensions, laying pattern and spare stock. Modular layouts and recoverable installation support future service works.
Inspect settlement, open joints, rocking units and blocked drainage early. Local repair is one of natural stone’s major public-realm advantages.
