Diagnosis: Scratches, Micro-Scratches and Loss of Gloss
Distinguish scratches, fine abrasion, acid etching, detergent films and normal wear before cleaning or refinishing polished marble and natural stone.
Use light to identify the surface change
Raking light reveals scratch direction, swirl marks and uneven polishing. Diffuse light shows broader differences in sheen and colour.
Clean a small area with a compatible method before assuming the stone itself is damaged.
Different causes look similar
Grit creates directional scratches; abrasive pads produce fine swirls; acid etching leaves dull irregular marks on carbonate stone; detergent films create streaky haze.
Traffic gradually changes gloss, particularly at entrances and turning points.
Assess depth and extent
A fingernail-catching scratch may require deeper grinding than a micro-scratch. Local repair can create a visible halo if surrounding wear is different.
Map affected zones and identify the finish and any resin treatment.

Trial the finish sequence
Professional restoration uses progressive abrasives to remove only enough material and rebuild the specified honed or polished finish.
Test under project lighting and allow the surface to dry before approval.
Prevent recurrence
Use entrance mats, grit removal, clean equipment and non-abrasive compatible products. Explain that sealer does not prevent scratching or acid etching.
Record the restored finish and approved maintenance method.
