Make unsafe stairs secure first
Loose nosing fragments, rocking treads and severe slip risk require immediate access control or temporary protection. Do not wait for a cosmetic repair.
Record conditions before cleaning or removal.
Why steps become slippery
Polishedshed or worn finish, detergent film, water, algae, oil, poor drainage and inadequate lighting can combine. The same stone may behave differently at an entrance and inside a dry hall.

Why nosings break
Thin projections, sharp internal cuts, weak veins, voids beneath the edge, impact and structural movement concentrate stress. Metal inserts can corrode and burst stone.

Verify rise, going, contrast, warning surfaces, handrails and lighting under applicable rules. Repairs should not create new trip edges.
Plan grit removal, compatible cleaning and periodic inspection of high-traffic stairs.
