How to Care for Premium Natural Stone: An Expert Guide

Premium natural stone ages beautifully when its finish, porosity and intended use are understood from the outset. Marble, limestone, travertine, onyx, granite and quartzite do not all react in the same way, so the best maintenance routine starts with identifying the material and the treatment already applied.

The essential rule: use pH-neutral products, remove spills quickly and avoid abrasive pads. When in doubt, test any product on an inconspicuous area.

A daily routine that protects the finish

For floors, remove grit with a soft vacuum head or microfibre mop before wet cleaning. Sand and dust act like an abrasive underfoot. For worktops, vanities and tables, wipe the surface with a soft cloth, warm water and a small amount of stone-safe neutral cleaner. Rinse if required and dry the surface to prevent streaks.

Avoid acidic household products such as vinegar, lemon-based cleaners and anti-limescale sprays on calcite-based stones. They can etch marble, limestone, travertine and many onyx varieties even when the surface has been sealed. Bleach, strong degreasers and scouring powders can also alter the colour, sheen or protective treatment.

Responding to spills and marks

Acid etching

A pale or dull mark caused by wine, citrus, vinegar or bathroom products is often an alteration of the surface rather than a stain. A poultice will not restore lost polish; the area normally requires professional refinishing.

Oil, cosmetics and coloured liquids

Blot rather than spread the liquid. Use a product formulated for natural stone and follow the manufacturer’s dwell time. Deep stains may require a professionally prepared poultice matched to the stone and contaminant.

Limescale in wet areas

Regular drying is safer than aggressive descaling. Good ventilation, a squeegee after showers and suitable water management reduce deposits without exposing the stone to harsh chemistry.

Sealing: useful protection, not a plastic shield

An impregnating sealer can reduce absorption and make maintenance easier, but it does not make stone stain-proof or acid-proof. The correct product and reapplication interval depend on the stone, finish, exposure and usage. Dense granites and some quartzites may need little or no treatment, while porous limestone and travertine generally require closer attention.

  • Confirm compatibility with the selected stone and any resin or factory treatment.
  • Apply only to a clean, completely dry surface.
  • Remove excess product to avoid haze or patchiness.
  • Keep a record of the product used for future maintenance.

Maintenance by application

Kitchens: use chopping boards, trivets and trays for oils or strongly coloured ingredients. Clean cooking splashes promptly.

Bathrooms: prioritise ventilation, drying and stone-compatible soap removal. Check joints and silicone regularly to prevent water entering behind the stone.

Floors: place effective entrance mats, use felt pads under furniture and maintain the finish before heavy wear becomes visible.

Backlit onyx and semi-precious stone: follow the fabricator’s instructions for joints, resins, backing systems and lighting access. Do not apply an unapproved chemical treatment.

When to call a stone specialist

Professional intervention is recommended for widespread etching, deep scratches, uneven sheen, movement at joints, cracked pieces or persistent moisture marks. Honing and polishing can often restore the intended finish without replacing the stone.

For a new project, maintenance should be considered during specification. Marbre Import can advise on the most suitable stone, finish, surface treatment and fabrication details for the expected use, then provide project-specific care guidance.
