Diagnosis and safety
Diagnosis: Slippery Stone Steps and Broken Nosings
Assess slippery natural-stone stairs and damaged nosings by examining finish, contamination, drainage, wear, geometry, support, impact and accessibility.
Make unsafe stairs secure first
Loose nosing fragments, rocking treads and severe slip risk require immediate access control or temporary protection. Do not wait for a cosmetic repair.
Record conditions before cleaning or removal.
Why steps become slippery
Polishedshed or worn finish, detergent film, water, algae, oil, poor drainage and inadequate lighting can combine. The same stone may behave differently at an entrance and inside a dry hall.
Evaluate the actual contaminant and footwear condition.
Why nosings break
Thin projections, sharp internal cuts, weak veins, voids beneath the edge, impact and structural movement concentrate stress. Metal inserts can corrode and burst stone.
Check support depth, crack pattern and repeated failures.
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| Slip only when wet | Finish, falls and drainage |
| Greasy or streaky surface | Cleaning film and dosing |
| Rounded worn edge | Traffic wear and retexturing |
| Clean nosing fracture | Impact, vein or inadequate section |
| Crack across several treads | Substrate or structural movement |
| Rust at insert | Corroding metal and trapped water |
Corrective options
Deep cleaning, finish modification, discreet inserts or replacement may improve slip performance. Any treatment should be tested for durability, cleaning and appearance.
Repair or replace broken nosings with adequate geometry and support; do not simply glue a dangerous fragment back without assessment.
Accessibility and maintenance
Verify rise, going, contrast, warning surfaces, handrails and lighting under applicable rules. Repairs should not create new trip edges.
Plan grit removal, compatible cleaning and periodic inspection of high-traffic stairs.
