France: NF DTU 52.1 and Mortar-Bed Natural-Stone Installation
Understand the role and limits of NF DTU 52.1 for traditional mortar-bed floor installation in France, including substrates, bedding, joints, movement and site control.

NF DTU 52.1 applies in France within a defined scope and current edition. It does not automatically cover every stone, format, heated floor, exterior or special substrate.
International teams should confirm applicability with the French designer and contractor before specifying the method.
Principle of mortar-bed laying
Stone or tile is placed on a fresh mortar bed over a prepared support or separating layer according to the system. Bedding thickness, compaction and contact must be controlled.
This method is not simply thick adhesive and should not be improvised from bonded-installation products.
Substrates and preparation
Verify support age, level, strength, moisture, movement joints and environmental conditions. Separating, insulation or waterproofing layers change the build-up and scope.
Stone sensitivity to moisture and staining remains a material-specific check.

Joints and curing
Carry structural and movement joints through as required and provide perimeters and fields appropriate to the build-up. Jointing must not lock intended movement.
Protect fresh mortar from premature drying, frost, heat and early traffic.
Documents and responsibility
Keep substrate acceptance, product information, layout, conditions and inspection records. Work outside standard scope may require a documented assessed solution.
