Separate the real indoor-health issues around natural stone: fabrication dust, installation products, radon, cleaning chemicals, moisture and ventilation.

Installed stone is not the same as fabrication dust

Respirable crystalline silica is a major occupational hazard during dry cutting, grinding and polishing of silica-containing materials. Once installed and undisturbed, a stone surface does not create the same exposure.

Control dust at source with wet methods or effective extraction, isolation, respiratory protection and legal exposure management.

Adhesives, sealants and VOCs

Natural stone itself is mineral, but adhesives, resins, sealants, coatings and cleaners can emit volatile compounds. Select products with appropriate emissions documentation and follow curing and ventilation instructions.

More product is not better: use only necessary compatible treatments.

Radon and building context

Radon usually enters from the ground and depends on geology, cracks, pressure and ventilation. Assess the site and occupied building rather than blaming decorative stone from appearance alone.

Where required, use recognised long-term measurements and specialist mitigation.

Moisture and cleaning

Leaks and trapped moisture can support microbial growth in adjacent organic materials even though stone is mineral. Repair the water source and dry the complete assembly.

Avoid aggressive perfumed cleaners and uncontrolled mixtures. A film-free compatible routine supports both stone and air quality.

Healthy project delivery

Plan off-site cutting, dust-controlled site adjustments, product storage and ventilation. Keep safety data and installation records.

At handover, provide clear cleaning guidance and allow adequate airing before occupation where wet-applied products have been used.
