Stone Installer Training Level 1: Essential Foundations

Build the core knowledge required to handle and install natural stone safely: identification, substrates, tools, setting out, bedding, joints, cleaning and site discipline.

Level 1 stone-installer training in substrate checks and preparation

Recognise the material

Distinguish major stone families, finishes, visible faces, natural variation and fragile features. Read labels, piece numbers and drawings before handling.

Know that marble, granite, limestone, travertine and quartzite can require different products and care.

Work safely

Assess weight, lifting route, sharp edges and stable storage. Use wet cutting or effective dust extraction and appropriate personal protection.

Never stand beneath suspended slabs or use unapproved lifting equipment.

Check the substrate

Confirm cleanliness, cohesion, flatness, levels, cracks and obvious moisture. Report conditions outside the method rather than covering them.

Understand waterproofing and movement joints as separate system requirements.

Install simple work

Prepare a dry layout, mix materials consistently and place stone without contamination. Maintain joint width, line, level and support.

Protect installed work and keep tools and water clean.

Know when to stop

Escalate active cracks, wet substrates, uncertain stone, unsupported heavy pieces and conflicting drawings. Basic competence includes recognising limits.

Record issues and follow site supervision and local safety rules.
