Layout planning—or stone setting-out—is the stage where architectural dimensions are translated into exact slab cuts, joints and vein positions. It has a direct effect on appearance, yield, fabrication, installation time and cost. Treating it as an afterthought can lead to awkward joints, unnecessary waste or additional slabs.
1. Start with verified site dimensions
Plans are essential, but final fabrication should rely on dimensions that reflect the built condition. Walls may not be perfectly square, floor levels can change and service penetrations may move. The required tolerance depends on the application, from floor tiles to bookmatched wall panels or a complex kitchen island.
- Identify finished levels and reference axes.
- Record openings, corners, outlets, fittings and movement joints.
- Confirm access constraints for large fabricated pieces.
- Separate design dimensions from fabrication dimensions.
2. Match the format to the stone and the room
Large formats reduce the number of joints but can increase handling risk, slab consumption and fabrication complexity. Smaller modules may improve yield and installation flexibility. The best solution balances the scale of the space, available slab dimensions, stone strength, substrate and desired visual rhythm.
For floors, align important joints with thresholds, architectural axes or fixed furniture. For walls and furniture, coordinate returns, edge build-ups and visible transitions before approving cuts.
3. Design with the veining
Natural movement should be composed intentionally. Veins can continue across adjacent panels, mirror in a bookmatch, rotate around a corner or create a deliberate contrast. Each option requires a different slab allocation.
Photographs must represent the actual lot and be sufficiently clear to identify fissures, resin areas, colour changes and the scale of the pattern. For expressive quartzite, marble or onyx, digital layout drawings are particularly valuable.
4. Calculate quantity using fabrication logic
Area alone is not enough. Two projects with the same square metres can require different numbers of slabs because of vein direction, repeated widths, cut-outs, edge details or the need to avoid specific areas.
A realistic quantity study includes:
- usable slab dimensions after trimming;
- directional veining and required continuity;
- cut-outs, mitred edges and reinforcement zones;
- breakage and installation contingency;
- future spare pieces where replacement would be difficult.
This approach may appear more conservative than a simple percentage allowance, but it gives better budget control because it is tied to the actual cutting plan.
5. Coordinate fabrication and installation early
The setting-out drawing should be reviewed by the architect or designer, client, fabricator and installer where appropriate. Responsibilities for site measurement, substrate preparation, joint width, adhesive system, sealing, lifting and protection must be clear.
Early coordination is especially important for façades, wet areas, stairs, fireplaces, very large panels and backlit stone. These applications involve technical requirements that cannot be solved by visual layout alone.
