Tinos Green Marble: origin and appearance
Tinos Green, also known as Vert de Tinos or Verde Tinos, is a Greek natural stone from the island of Tinos in the Cyclades. Its deep to dark green background is crossed by a network of white and pale veins. Depending on the block, the pattern may be fine and closely spaced or form large, striking brecciated areas.
This distinctive stone suits projects where the material becomes a focal point: a feature wall, fireplace, bathroom, tabletop or reception area. Every slab has its own pattern; lot selection and vein orientation determine the final result.
An ophicalcite commercially classified among green marbles
Tinos Green is an ophicalcite. Its green colour is notably associated with serpentine minerals, while the pale veins contain calcite and dolomite. This composition distinguishes it from a conventional calcitic marble and makes it necessary to assess each lot for its intended application.
A reference at the United Nations headquarters
Tinos Green is notably used at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where it clads the General Assembly rostrum. The contrast between the dark green background and white veins demonstrates the architectural presence of this stone.

Tinos Green, Guatemala Green or Green Alps Marble?
| Tinos Green | Dark green, white veining and a brecciated structure, with a distinctive Greek architectural identity. |
| Guatemala Green | Often a more homogeneous green, suited to understated, consistent compositions. |
| Green Alps Marble | A deep green background and contrasting pale veins for graphic compositions. |
These descriptions reflect general visual tendencies. Comparing the available slabs remains essential to selecting the colour and pattern that suit your project.
Specification advice
Choosing Tinos Green Marble for a high-end project
A sample photograph cannot show the full pattern of a large panel. For a fireplace or wall, a striking area of veining can become the centre of the composition. For a floor or several matching elements, consistent colour and veining across the slabs are important.
For architects
Plan the pattern at full scale, joints and combinations with wood, bronze, brass or pale plaster finishes.
For stone fabricators and contractors
Confirm thicknesses, cutting, any reinforcement, dimensional stability and compatibility between the installation system and the selected lot.
For discerning homeowners
Compare green stones, choose a polished or honed appearance and understand maintenance requirements before confirming your selection.
Caring for Tinos Green Marble
Use gentle cleaning with a pH-neutral product. Avoid acidic cleaners, limescale removers and abrasive products, particularly because of the carbonate veins. A water- or oil-repellent treatment may be considered depending on the application: it can limit the penetration of some liquids but does not protect the stone from chemical attack.
How should you confirm your stone selection?
Selection depends on the available lot, its colour and veins, the format, finish, thickness and application. Marbre Import can assist with slab photographs, samples where possible and available technical information.
Can Tinos Green Marble be used in a bathroom or kitchen?
The project should take account of the finish, exposure to water, stains and acids, and the expected maintenance requirements. Feasibility and installation products must be confirmed before ordering.
Why is the price available on request?
The price depends on the lot, availability, dimensions, thickness, finish, quantities and transport. A tailored sourcing process allows us to quote for the actual requirements of your project.
