France: NF DTU 52.2 and Adhesive-Fixed Natural Stone

Understand how NF DTU 52.2 frames adhesive-fixed stone and tile work in France, with attention to scope, substrates, stone sensitivity, coverage, joints and conditions.

Check the current French scope

NF DTU 52.2 addresses bonded installation on defined walls and floors in France. Limits depend on interior or exterior use, support, format, height and product classification.

Large formats, unusual backings or special exposures may fall outside ordinary scope.

Substrate acceptance

Confirm strength, flatness, cleanliness, age, cracks, moisture and movement joints. Primers or levelling products must be part of a compatible approved system.

Waterproofing in wet areas is a separate designed layer.

Stone and adhesive compatibility

Natural stone can be moisture-sensitive, translucent, resin-backed or prone to staining. Choose adhesive colour, deformability and cure for the exact stone and support.

Follow mixing, open time and application requirements.

ControlWhy it matters
Stone identificationSensitivity, finish and backing
Adhesive classificationUse, support and environmental conditions
FlatnessControls bedding thickness and lippage
CoveragePrevents voids and weak support
Movement jointsAllows building and thermal movement
CleaningAvoids permanent residue or etching

Coverage and joints

Use the specified trowel and back-buttering method where required. Inspect coverage during work instead of relying on hollow-sound testing after completion.

Coordinate regular joints with structural, perimeter and movement joints.

Compliance file

Retain product sheets, batch details, substrate records, conditions and installation inspections. Non-standard solutions need written technical assessment.

Use the official current NF DTU and French professionals for project decisions; this English guide is explanatory.
