What petrography can establish

Petrography describes the minerals, texture, grain relationships, pores, fractures, fossils, alteration and geological classification of a stone. It provides a more reliable identity than colour or trade name alone.

It can support sourcing, comparison with existing work, selection of test methods and interpretation of deterioration. It does not by itself certify suitability for every use.

From hand specimen to thin section

The investigation begins with macroscopic observation of fresh and weathered faces, bedding, veins, cavities and repairs. A thin section viewed under a polarising microscope then reveals mineral and pore relationships at a much smaller scale.

Sampling must represent the question. A small specimen from one vein cannot describe an entire quarry batch, and heritage sampling should minimise damage.

Reading texture and anisotropy

Interlocking crystals, preferred mineral orientation, bedding, cleavage and stylolites influence strength, water movement, cutting and weathering. Directional fabric is especially important for panels, treads and carved pieces.

Laboratory specimens should be oriented to match the real load or exposure whenever direction affects performance.

Linking description to performance

Petrography helps explain why a result occurs, but engineering values still come from appropriate tests and design. Two stones with similar names may differ in pore structure or alteration.

Combine petrography with quarry knowledge, declared data, representative samples and the intended system.

Identification for restoration

Historic stone may be dirty, weathered or coated, making visual identification unreliable. Compare fresh fracture, thin section, archive sources and known regional quarries.

When the original source is unavailable, seek a compatible replacement in mineralogy, pore behaviour, strength, tooling and weathering—not merely a colour match.
