Substrates, Screeds, Levelling and Residual Moisture Before Stone Installation
Assess and prepare substrates for natural stone by controlling strength, flatness, movement, residual moisture, contaminants and compatibility before fixing.

Stone follows substrate movement, deflection and cracking. Verify construction type, age, strength, stability, joints and environmental conditions before selecting an installation method.
Do not approve the surface from appearance alone. Sounding, measurements, records and local opening-up may be necessary.
Flatness, levels and geometry
Large-format stone requires controlled flatness; stairs and wet areas also depend on finished levels and falls. Levelling compounds must suit thickness, exposure, substrate and adhesive.
Avoid using excessive adhesive to compensate for a poorly prepared base.
Residual moisture
New concrete and screeds retain water long after the surface looks dry. Moisture can affect adhesion, cause darkening, transport salts or react with resin and backing.
Use the measurement method and acceptance criteria required by the installation system and project country. Record location, depth, conditions and results.

Movement joints and heating
Structural and movement joints must be identified and carried through where required. Heated screeds need curing and a documented commissioning cycle.
Coordinate stone layout with bay sizes, perimeters, thresholds and heating zones before cutting.
Acceptance before installation
Record substrate approval, outstanding repairs, moisture values, environmental conditions and agreed method. A sample installation can confirm colour, bedding and cleaning.
Once stone is fixed, hidden conditions are difficult and expensive to investigate. Preparation is a controlled project stage, not a preliminary formality.
