Breccia Portoro Marble
Breccia Portoro Marble: origin and appearance
Breccia Portoro is a dramatic black-and-gold marble quarried near Porto Venere in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, Italy.
It is also marketed as Nero Portoro, Giallo Portoro, Portoro Vena, Portoro Macchia, Portoro Gold and Porte-Or.
Depending on the block, the gold veining may be broad or fine, which explains the commercial qualifiers larga and fine.
The marble has an intense black ground crossed by rich gold veining. Occasional fine white veins may also appear, but they are generally discreet.
Areas of pure black create strong contrast and allow the gold movement to command the surface.
Characteristics and applications of Breccia Portoro Marble
Black marble is highly valued in interior design for its depth, graphic clarity and timeless elegance.
Breccia Portoro’s gold veins introduce light and warmth, placing it among the most recognisable statement marbles for luxury interiors.
Its density and strength support a wide range of interior architectural applications, subject to appropriate specification and maintenance.
Polished and honed finishes are most commonly specified. Polishing maximises the contrast between gold and black, while honing creates a more restrained, tactile surface.
Like Black Marquina Marble, Breccia Portoro is frequently used for floors and walls, as well as fireplaces, bars, bathrooms and bespoke stone furniture.
