Black Marquina Marble: description
Origin and appearance of Black Marquina Marble
Black Marquina is a deep black decorative limestone quarried around Markina in Biscay, northern Spain. Internationally marketed as marble, it dates from the Carboniferous period.
Standard selections may show more grey tonal movement within the black background.
Vein density and background consistency vary across the quarry and from lot to lot. Marbre Import can provide slab photographs so that the project team can select the desired balance of black ground and white veining.
China Marquina is a separate Asian trade material with a broadly similar black-and-white appearance. Its geology, technical properties and vein pattern should be assessed independently rather than treated as identical to Spanish Black Marquina.
Characteristics and applications
Black Marquina is often combined with white Carrara marble in chequerboard floors and other strongly contrasted compositions.
Black Marquina can be used for floors, walls, bathrooms, fireplaces and furniture. Polished surfaces in high-traffic areas require an appropriate maintenance strategy because scratches and wear are more visible on a dark reflective background.
A polished finish intensifies the deep black ground and crisp white veins, while a honed finish creates a softer, more contemporary appearance.

Approval should consider the available lot, colour, veining, format, finish, thickness and intended application. Marbre Import can support selection with slab photographs, samples and technical data.
Can this stone be used in kitchens and bathrooms?
Suitability depends on the stone, finish, treatment, expected maintenance and exposure to staining or acidic products. Technical guidance is recommended before ordering.
Why is pricing provided on request?
Pricing varies with the lot, origin, availability, thickness, finish, quantities, fabrication and transport. A tailored quotation reflects the actual project rather than a theoretical list price.
